The scene is Jacob's Well in Samaria, at noon. Jesus is tired from the journey and sits down nearby, alone. A woman comes to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink; she is surprised, because Jews do not normally associate with Samaritans. A revealing conversation follows. It is one of the few times that Jesus is recorded claiming to be the Messiah.
The disciples arrive, having gone to town to get food. They are surprised to see Jesus talking to a woman.
