The Saving of Zacchaeus

The distant landscape is loosely based on Mornington Dunedin, the church on a converted church in Argyle Street. Zachaeus is a short man, and has climbed a tree in order to see Jesus who is coming his way. He is wealthy but unpopular, a hated Tax Collector, and his expression suggests he is discouraged, lost. The crowd have come, curious to see someone they have heard marvellous things about. The attention of the kids is elsewhere, and the mother is distracted by it. Jesus looks past the others, including the priest; he perceives Zachaeus in the tree, calls him down and invites himself to his house! The crowd is not pleased by this.
